Graduate in cap and gown celebrates in front of Old Main building on a sunny day.

Photographing this University of Arizona graduation session was such a special milestone for me — not only because it celebrated an incredible accomplishment, but because it was also my very first session after relocating to Tucson, Arizona.

The University of Arizona campus provided the perfect backdrop for graduation portraits, with its iconic architecture, palm-lined walkways, and beautiful winter light. This session instantly made me fall in love with photographing in Tucson and all of the beauty the city has to offer.

Why the University of Arizona is Perfect for Graduation Photos

The University of Arizona campus offers some of the most beautiful locations in Tucson for graduation photography. Between the historic architecture, palm-lined walkways, and warm Arizona light, every corner of campus creates a timeless backdrop for celebrating such an important milestone.

One of my favorite things about photographing graduation sessions at UofA is how versatile the campus feels. You can create images that feel elevated and editorial while still capturing genuine personality and excitement throughout the session.

A Graduation Story Worth Celebrating

This University of Arizona graduation session felt extra special because her story was anything but ordinary. She completed her degree remotely while serving through the Navy, then traveled all the way back to Tucson to walk at graduation and have her portraits taken the morning of the ceremony.

That kind of commitment deserves to be documented.

We used the session to capture a mix of classic cap-and-gown portraits, soft individual portraits, playful movement, and meaningful detail shots. From the graduation stole and tassel to the cap toss and campus portraits, this gallery was about more than just taking pretty pictures — it was about honoring the work, sacrifice, and determination it took to get to this moment.

One of my favorite parts of graduation sessions is making space for both the polished “send-to-grandma” photos and the candid moments that actually feel like you. Whether you want something elegant, fun, emotional, or a little bit of everything, your graduation session should feel like a celebration of the full story that brought you here.

Best Photo Spots for Graduation Pictures at the University of Arizona

One of my favorite things about graduation photos at the University of Arizona is that the campus gives you so much variety without making you feel like you just signed up for a cardio workout in heels. Which, honestly, is important. Even though… that’s exactly what it is.

For this session, we moved around campus and used a mix of classic UofA spots, pretty architecture, soft greenery, and a few tucked-away areas that helped give her gallery more personality and variety.

We started in a heavily tree-covered walkway lined with lemon trees. Yes, lemon trees. Who knew Tucson, Arizona had the perfect climate for lemons and other citrus trees to grow? Not me.

So imagine my surprise when we rounded the corner, looked up, and saw lemons everywhere. The campus is smart about it though — the foliage and fruit were trimmed so high that not even the star basketball players were picking fresh lemons between classes.

This little spot gave us a softer, more natural look before we moved into the more classic campus backdrops.

From there, we used the large stone pillars near the Engineering building. I love spots like this because they give you clean lines, pretty texture, and a totally different feel from all the greenery — without needing to overthink it. She could just stand there, adjust her cap and gown, laugh a little, and suddenly it looked like we planned some grand architectural moment. We did not. We simply found good pillars and let them do their job.

And of course, we had to walk along University Boulevard with those giant palm trees in the background. It’s one of those spots that just feels like UofA without needing to explain itself.

Palm trees, sunshine, cap and gown, done.

Now, honestly, are you even getting the full University of Arizona graduation experience if you don’t include a few of the iconic spots? The fountain at Old Main, the stairs in front of the Old Main Library, and the second-floor balcony area all had to make an appearance. Obviously.

These are the classic UofA graduation photo locations for a reason. They are super recognizable, fun, and very “I did the thing, please clap” — which is exactly the energy graduation deserves.

A Little Graduation Morning Bonus

One of my favorite little moments from this session actually happened after we wrapped up. While we were still on campus, I ended up taking a few quick photos for two other graduates who were celebrating that morning too — one from the medical program and one finishing a PHD.

It was completely unplanned, but honestly, that’s kind of the magic of graduation day. Everyone is excited, proud, slightly overwhelmed, probably running on caffeine, and just happy to be there. There’s this shared “we did it” energy all over campus, and I loved getting to capture a tiny piece of that for them too.

Planning a UofA Graduation Session That Actually Feels Like You

If you are planning your own UofA graduation session (or any other type of grad session), I always recommend choosing a few different types of backdrops (locations) instead of staying in one spot the whole time. You don’t need to hit every single corner of campus — because again, cardio in heels — but mixing in a few different spots gives you enough variety to KILL those Grad Announcements

.

A good graduation session usually has a little bit of everything: the classic cap-and-gown photos, a few softer portraits, some campus details, close-ups of your stole or tassel, and a handful of movement shots like walking, laughing, or tossing your cap. But a great graduation session? Well… obviously, I’m going to vote for one where I get to come along!

Basically, we want the photos your mom & grandma immediately wants framed, the ones you want to post, and the ones that show the pride of how hard you've worked — not just standing still in front of a building because someone told you to.
